SEQUOIA PACIFIC’S SoilSET/LACCOSET™ RE-VEG SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNOLOGY SOUGHT BY “AUZZIES DOWNUNDER”

A business group representing local governments in Australia, having a high interest in Sequoia Pacific’s soil erosion technology, has approached Sequoia Pacific. The request has been initiated by the recent devastation resulting from the forest fires in the Canberra area, Australia’s Capital city. The threat of soil erosion comes with the early rains later this year. The government’s main interest is protecting strategic assets such as rivers, streams and fish hatcheries in those regions. Discussions are underway to plan for licensing and product manufacturing down under.

SEQUOIA PACIFIC USING FIXED WING AIRCRAFT TO APPLY SEQUOIA PACIFIC’S DUST CONTROL/SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNOLOGY

A collaborative effort between Aero Tech Aviation Company, Sequoia Pacific, and LA Chemical will provide the feasibility test for application of SoilSET/LACCOSET™ dust control chemical delivered from a fixed wind aircraft. Soil stabilization or dust control typically is applied by spreader or water trucks. The aerial delivery system will be integrated with the SoilSET/LACCOSET™ dust control product developed by Sequoia Pacific and will be used in the following areas of interests. Soil stabilization/dust control, will provide non-traffic areas with any type of application difficulty factor, a solution for control of fugitive dust. Aerial seeding, using seed only, with aerial overlay application of SoilSET/LACCOSET™, medium viscosity organic binder for tacking seed in place. Aerially applied SoilSET/LACCOSET™ binder for straw tacking that protects straw from blowing away. These are all areas of high interest with US Forest Service, PNNL (DOE managers at Hanford Washington) and B.A.E.R., Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (internal agency of the USFS).

SEQUOIA PACIFIC AND ERICKSON AIR-CRANE PRESENT TROUGH FIRE RESULTS AT B.A.E.R. CONVENTION.

Sequoia Pacific and Erickson Air-Crane attended the recent Burned Area Emergency rehabilitation conference in Reno. Trough Fire aerial demonstration results were presented here, by the USFS, providing the latest technology and methods of post fire soil conservation, using the SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg product. The application model developed by Sequoia Pacific and Erickson at the Trough Fire site provided costs savings of 50% over other standard industry applications used on similar fire sites. This cost comparison was made using figures from the Hyman Fire project in Colorado. SoilSET/LACCOSET™ functionality and performance were outstanding, meeting or exceeding the project design previously conceptualized by Sequoia Pacific and Erickson Air-Crane.

SEQUOIA PACIFIC TROUGH FIRE SITE HAS TWO-DAY DOWNPOUR

Sequoia Pacific and the USFS re-visited the Trough Fire site after receiving 6 inches of rainfall, the first week in November, over two consecutive days. Evaluations were made by both USFS and Sequoia Pacific personnel to determine the effects of water erosion and any expected vegetation growth. Signs of water erosion runoff were almost non-existent with impressive performance by the SoilSET/LACCOSET™ product. Re-Vegetation re-growth was apparent as seedlings from both native and planted barley were clearly visible. The dominant growth was from the native annuals. SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg provided obvious soil retention and excellent high integrity in the applied areas.

SEQUOIA PACIFIC’S SoilSET/LACCOSET™ RE-VEG SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNOLOGY UNDURES SUMMER HEAT

Sequoia Pacific and the USFS visit the test site for the 6-month evaluation of application of SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg product. Stabilization of the soil in all areas is successful, however no new vegetation is present due to the complete lack of moisture since March. The Through Fire site received no rainfall for over 6 months while day time temperatures ranged from the high 80’s to low 100’s.

SUCCESSFUL AERIAL DROP USING SEQUOIA PACIFIC’S NEWLY DEVELOPED SoilSET/LACCOSET™ RE-VEG SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNOLOGY

Sequoia Pacific and Erickson Air-Crane and product manufacturer LA Chemical demonstrated an aerial application using SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg for plant vegetation re-growth at the Trough Fire area in the Mendocino National Forest. The Northern California location hosted members of the US Forestry Division from Willows, San Dimas and Chico California. Several types of aerial drops were successfully made using various product configurations. The results will be evaluated over the next 12 months by the USFS and Sequoia Pacific.

PLAN IS UNDERWAY FOR AERIAL DEMONSTRATION WITH USFS USING SEQUOIA PACIFIC’S SoilSET/LACCOSET™ RE-VEG SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNOLOGY

Sequoia Pacific and Erickson Air-Crane have collaborated to design and implement an aerial demonstration project with the USDA and USFS, for plant re-vegetation located at the Trough Fire site in the Mendocino National Forest in Northern California. The design was created to demonstrate the aerial delivery system from a S-64 Heli-tanker Helicopter for soil stabilization capabilities using SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg product. Seeds were also blended with the chemical matrix in case of unexpected seasonal rainfall.
The site was selected by the USFS relative to strategic concerns about soil erosion control in a burned area of about 20,000 acres occurring in August of 2001. Erickson Air-Crane and Sequoia Pacific pioneered the application of Sequoia Pacific’s new product, SoilSET/LACCOSET™ Re-Veg, back in 1996, to be applied from the air using Erickson’s computerized deployment system. The product performance evaluation will be conducted over the next 12 months by the USFS at Mendocino and the USFS research and development division from San Dimas California.
